On July 22, 2024, in Apia, Samoa, the Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS) experienced the tragic loss of Detective Sergeant Mamea Peniamina Mamea Perite during an attempted arrest of a murder suspect in Fasitoo-Uta. The suspect remains at large, and collaborative efforts with the local community are underway to locate and apprehend the individual.

The sequence of events commenced with a report of a shooting involving a woman's partner and her ex-husband in Fasitoo-Uta, leading to the dispatch of Detective Sergeant Perite, a distinguished figure in the Homicide Unit, to the scene. Regrettably, during the arrest endeavour, the suspect allegedly shot and fatally wounded Perite, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries at Leulumoega Hospital. This loss profoundly impacted the SPPCS and the broader community.

The SPPCS expressed a profound sense of bereavement, highlighting Perite's dedication and exceptional service and acknowledging his significant contributions to law enforcement in Samoa while underscoring the profound impact of his absence. Recognised for his unwavering commitment to justice and compassionate policing approach, Perite garnered widespread respect and admiration.

Ongoing efforts to locate the suspect are in progress, and the police are committed to ensuring community safety. Engaging with the villagers of Fasitoo-Uta, the police are striving to bring the suspect to justice while cautioning the public against approaching the considered armed and dangerous suspect and requesting respect for the privacy of Perite's family during this challenging period.

A forthcoming memorial service, with details to be announced, will commemorate Detective Sergeant Perite. The SPPCS has invited the community to join in honouring Perite, whose legacy of dedication and integrity will continue to inspire his colleagues. Heartfelt condolences have been extended to Perite's family, recognising the profound loss they are experiencing.
