From an article written by Daniel Beswick on icc-cricket.com, we are happy to report that Samoa has triumphed at the U19 Women's East Asia-Pacific Qualifier, securing their place in the Women's U19 T20 World Cup next year. This historic achievement marks the first time any Samoan team has qualified for a World Cup in cricket, across all formats and age levels.
Heading into the final matchday in Indonesia, Samoa topped the double round-robin tournament and needed a win over Fiji to cement their spot. Avetia Fetu Mapu's side rose to the occasion, securing a four-wicket victory with 34 balls to spare. Their journey was marked by consistent performances and resilience, particularly in overcoming more experienced teams like Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
Despite entering the competition as underdogs, Samoa's determination was evident from their first match, where they chased down a target of 124 against Papua New Guinea with standout performances from Verra Farane and Mapu. They continued to dominate by winning both fixtures against Indonesia, with Silepea Plataivao's 6/15 being a highlight. Though they lost to Papua New Guinea in a subsequent match, crucial points dropped by their rivals kept Samoa in contention. On the final day, despite a hat-trick from Fiji's Mele Waqanisau, Samoa's top order laid a solid foundation to ensure their chase of 89 was successful, concluding in the 15th over and securing their spot at the World Cup.
This is awesome result, I love Cricket and love watching the big bash. Congratulations Team Tamaitai Samoa Under 19 team. Lopking forward watching more of your games. God bless.
