Public security in Apia has been significantly upgraded with the installation of over 100 CCTV cameras, part of a wider effort to bolster safety in preparation for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October 2024. This meeting, which is expected to attract international leaders and delegates, has prompted Samoa to enhance its security infrastructure.

Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, in collaboration with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), has led the project, with high-tech 360-degree cameras now covering key areas from Matautu to Mulinuu.

These cameras are designed to reduce blind spots and offer enhanced situational awareness for law enforcement, helping to prevent crime and respond swiftly to incidents. The system allows real-time monitoring from an operations room where police officers, supported by IT staff, can zoom in on specific locations across Apia.

Comprehensive Security Measures

The CCTV installation is part of a broader investment in national security, which includes the revamping of the Emergency Radio Network. The total cost of the cameras exceeds SAT $400,000, with additional support from international partners such as the Australian Federal Police. The cameras will be critical during the CHOGM event, ensuring heightened surveillance of key locations as Samoa welcomes over 50 heads of government and thousands of delegates.

In addition to CCTV coverage, other measures will be in place, including the deployment of three warships and a helicopter to provide emergency response and border security. These efforts reflect Samoa's comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety of its guests and citizens during the high-profile event.

Long-Term Benefits for Public Safety

While the CCTV network will play a vital role during CHOGM, its benefits will extend far beyond the event. Commissioner Filipo has emphasised that the cameras will support local law enforcement efforts in managing crime and monitoring areas of concern, such as street vendor activities. He has urged the public to respect the cameras, stressing their importance in maintaining the safety of the community.

Samoa's preparation for CHOGM is advancing rapidly, with significant resources being allocated to security and infrastructure improvements. These efforts underscore the country’s commitment to hosting a successful international event while ensuring the long-term security of its people.
