Don Opeloge, the Samoan weightlifting star, recently competed in the Men's 102 kg weightlifting event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Unfortunately, his performance didn't go as planned. Opeloge struggled in the snatch portion, failing to successfully lift 170 kg after three attempts. As a result, he was unable to continue to the clean and jerk phase and did not record a total, which led to his disqualification from the competition.
Despite this setback, Opeloge remains a significant figure in weightlifting, with past successes including a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. His journey and efforts continue to inspire many in Samoa and beyond
The Opeloges are a prominent family in the world of weightlifting, with several members achieving international success. Don Opeloge is the most well-known, but his siblings also have impressive records. His brother Niusila Opeloge won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, while his sister Ele Opeloge made history by winning Samoa's first-ever Olympic medal, a silver, at the 2008 Beijing Games. Their achievements have made the Opeloge family a symbol of pride and inspiration in Samoa.
