In a recent parliamentary session, Lenatai Victor Faafoi Tamapua, the Member of Parliament for Vaimauga 2, brought attention to a significant issue plaguing the community. He highlighted the mounting rubbish issues in front of homes and businesses, particularly with the upcoming CHOGM meeting on the horizon. MP Tamapua emphasised the need for immediate action and urged the Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to streamline rubbish collection by eliminating the differentiation between personal and business waste. Additionally, he proposed imposing a charge on businesses for rubbish collection to address the escalating problem.
Furthermore, MP Tamapua drew attention to the lack of means for most businesses to transport rubbish to disposal sites and suggested that the ministry could potentially offer this as a paid service. His call for action represents a crucial step towards addressing the growing waste management challenges faced by the community.
In defence of the Ministry, MNRE has advocated for a cleaner Samoa through media campaigns and physical clean-up initiatives involving the government and private sector. However, there is a clear need for a stronger sense of civic duty and environmental stewardship among citizens to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable country for future generations.
Ultimately, keeping Samoa clean is a shared responsibility that requires collaborative efforts from all stakeholders.
